Give Them a Want and a Need

• Wants to win the crown / needs to learn they were never the problem.
• Wants revenge / needs to grieve.
• Wants to be left alone / needs to be part of something.
• Wants to fix everyone / needs to save themselves first.

Protagonist Archetypes Worth Twisting

• The reluctant hero who is genuinely bad at it.
• The chosen one who refuses, and is right to.
• The ordinary person who keeps choosing to stay.
• The competent one hiding a spectacular failure.
• The “villain” of someone else’s story, telling their own.

Make Them Root-For-Able

• Show them being kind when it costs them.
• Give them one thing they’re good at and let us see them do it.
• Let them be funny — humour buys enormous goodwill.
• Show them treated unfairly early on.
• Let them want something desperately, and be honest about it.

Give Them Room to Grow

• What belief must be broken for them to win?
• What would the version of them from chapter one never do?
• What will they have to lose to become who they need to be?
